MCM Mad Men

Designing for myself was always going to be an interesting dynamic, with numerous options and choices to consider.

The brief was simple: I wanted the space to reflect my grandmother's kitchen, capturing the essence of mid-century design.

Providing layers of texture, colour and technical applications. However, I also needed to work within the constraints of a new build with existing white walls and concrete floors. Additionally, I faced the challenge of working with a small footprint without making the space feel cluttered.

The Design Statement: Infusing Timeless Elegance with Modern Functionality

To achieve the desired look, I infused blackwood timber throughout the design, reminiscent of the tonal hues commonly used in mid-century interiors. The Artedomus tiled benchtop, reminiscent of my grandmother's kitchen, became a central feature. The same tile was used for the window reveals and adjacent feature wall to create symmetry and balance.

The deliberate sausage-like booth seating, with its layered texture, provided contrast to the adjoining surfaces and visually opened up the space. It also doubled as a perfect place for clients to wait or enjoy a drink after the day's activities. Hidden wine storage at the back of the island was a practical addition for after-hour drinks. Timber ribbing, handle details, doors trims, and shelving showcased the technical aspects associated with tradespersons of the past.

Exposed timber veneer ceiling beams delineated the space, while the stone splashback added drama and served as a focal point. Four LED lighting options were introduced to highlight the space, provide task lighting for food prep, illuminate the feature stone splashback, and backlight the amber bottle glass sliding door.
